Senator Nelson Cozying Up to Dangerous Dictators Chávez and Assad

Governor Scott does not support doing business with brutal dictatorships who are not committed to freedom and democracy for their people. Under Governor Scott’s leadership, Florida has stood in direct opposition to the Castro dictatorship and its influence in Latin America in support of those who are fighting for human rights, freedom and democracy.

But, Senator Nelson has repeatedly put politics above the safety of Americans by failing to stand up to oppressive dictatorships:

    • Senator Nelson traveled to Syria to meet with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, despite opposition from the White House and U.S. State Department.
    • Senator Nelson even traveled to Venezuela to meet with Hugo Chavez, the disastrous dictator of Venezuela. A newspaper reported at the time that his trip to Venezuela was an example of democrats “cozying up” to Chavez.
    • Senator Nelson supported Obama’s efforts in Cuba, which have helped to prop up the oppressive Castro regime. (Sandra Frederick, “‘This Is A Hallelujah Day,’” The Key West Citizen (Florida), 12/18/14)

“Senator Nelson sold out our Cuban community to be buddies with President Obama. And this inaction has led to the crisis in Venezuela and Nicaragua. Senator Nelson doesn’t realize that you cannot appease immoral and tyrannical dictators. Floridians deserve a Senator who will always remain on the side of those fighting for freedom and democracy in Cuba, Venezuela and beyond – not one who has a history of cozying up to brutal dictators.” – Lauren Schenone, Scott for Florida Press Secretary
